Have you ever wondered exactly what a vitamin is? A vitamin is an organic compound which is needed by an organism for it’s life, growth, or metabolism and must be acquired via food or environmental sources.
Vitamin D is a very unique vitamin because it can be derived from food and sunlight. There is only one natural form of Vitamin D which is D3. However this naturally occuring form has three different names:
- Cholecalciferol - the form of D3 produced when sunlight lingers on bare skin and also available in supplement form.
- Calcidiol – a hormone precursor created in the blood from cholecalciferol. Vitamin D tests check calcidiol levels in the blood.
- Calcitriol- a hormone created in the kidneys from calcidiol and cholecalciferol with significant cancer-fighting abilities.
Many people who have had their Vitamin D levels tested are then written prescriptions for Vitamin D2. Vitamin D2 is called ergocalciferol or calciferol. Vitamin D2 is an inactive form created from fungus and, unlike D3, is not naturally occuring to the human body. The reduced bioavailability of Vitamin D2 makes it much more difficult for the human body to utilize.
Adequate amounts of Vitamin D3 have been shown to dramatically reduce serious health risks. The following chart provided by GrassRootsHealth.org shows specific correlations between measured levels of Vitamin D3 and deduced incidents of disease and cancer including:

If you’ve wondered whether an emotional behavior may be rooted more in chemistry than physiology, you may be right. Serotonin has a powerful effect on our feelings and physical behavior. When serotonin levels are adequate we feel safe, happy, content, satiated, and have great impulse control. Serotonin deficiency syndrome is when levels are low enough to cause or exacerbate the following:
These behaviors and emotional states are not necessarily produced by a physical dysfunction in the brain. Instead, it may be based on a biochemical condition that can be traced back to the brain’s serotonin neural circuits which are hampered due to inadequate amounts of serotonin in the nerve pathways. A serotonin precursor called l-tryptophan (or tryptophan) can restore these biochemical transmissions to the serotonin neural receptors. L-Tryptophan supplementation is a safe and natural way of increasing low serotonin levels.

A series of two year studies were conducted between 2000-2007 on daily consumers of diet soda. In January
2009 the results were published in Diabetes Care noting a 67% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in diet soda drinkers. In addition, the diet soda drinkers also demonstrated a 36% increase in a condition known as “metabolic syndrome”.
Metabolic syndrome is when three or more of the following health concerns exist in an individual:
- Excessive fat around waist.
- Elevated triglycerides (a type of fat) in blood.
- Low levels of HDL cholesterol (sometimes called “good” cholesterol) in blood.
- High blood pressure.
- Higher than normal fasting blood sugar levels.
Although diet soda manufactures disagreed that there was a direct correlation, the authors of this study concluded by saying: “Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with other dietary and lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control, and eventual diabetes.”

Last night, 60 Minutes aired a segment on resveratrol and the promise that it holds for extending life and reducing or preventing the diseases of old age. 60 Minutes chose to focus exclusively on the pharmaceutical research leading to an eventual drug–that Galaxo Smith Kline will patent and profit from. They also only mentioned the research by Sirtris when there has been published studies and other significant research going on all over the globe and at major universities.
This is disappointing considering that you can get resveratrol today and start receiving the benefits immediately. It makes me wonder if Dr. Sinclair agreed to be interviewed as long as 60 Minutes didn’t mention any of the other readily-available and natural alternatives.

A study by the Journal of Medicinal Food found that combining resveratrol, genistein and quercetin in relatively low concentrations produced apoptosis (cell death) in human fat cells.
Studies using large amounts of resveratrol alone did not generate these intriguing results.
Resveratrol, genistein and quercetin all belong to a class of phytochemicals called flavonoids and are powerful antioxidants. Exploration in the use of phytochemical applications for obesity and cancer contributes to the growing list of safe and demonstrable benefits derived from antioxidant therapy.
