Ward-off winter blues, depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder with Vitamin D

winter girlA study conducted by the Department of Medicine at the Union Memorial Hospital in Maryland compared photolight therapy to the use of vitamin D on a group of subjects with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

The randomized controlled trial found that after one month the subjects who received phototherapy showed no significant improvements in their vitamin D levels or in their depression. However, the group who received vitamin D experienced significant reductions in their depression and showed increased levels of vitamin D in their blood serum.

The study concluded that vitamin D3 may be a valuable treatment for SAD.

Multiple studies on the use of vitamin D for depression, anxiety and cognitive disorders have been listed at the Vitamin D Council site.

Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2 provides 5000 iu’s per dose of highly bioavailable vitamin D3 with the additional benefit of vitamin K2 for increased bone and vascular health. Many people who were disappointed with vitamin D in capsule form have enjoyed the ease of use and up to 95% absorption provided in this delicious drinkable isotonic solution.

Boost Fertility for Men and Women with Vitamin D and OPC’s

Pregnant CoupleIn the United States over 6.2 million women struggle with infertility and the numbers are climbing. Up to 60% of couples have difficulty conceiving due to poor sperm motility. Supporting overall nutrition with high-quality, bioavailable nutrients is a safe, simple, and inexpensive approach to improving this condition. Clearing up underlying nutritional weaknesses will not only benefit fertility, it will improve overall health and increase longevity.

Two powerful health and fertility supplements for both men and women are Vitamin D and Oligomeric Procyanthocyanidins or (OPC’s).

Vitamin D continues to to be in the health spotlight due to the staggering number of people who are deficient in this important nutrient. The alarming correlation between hundreds of different illnesses/disorders and low levels of vitamin D has persuaded many health care professionals to encourage supplementation.

A recent study conducted with 84 infertile women found significantly higher rates of pregnancies occurred when blood serum levels of vitamin D were increased. Fertility specialist, Dr. Anne Clark, found that one third of men tested with fertility problems had below normal levels of vitamin D.

Adequate supplementation can fall short even though approximately half of the US population consumes some type of multi-vitamin. Many people don’t know that the US RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamins and minerals was established as minimum amounts to prevent the onset of disease due to severe deficiency for average healthy adult males. RDA’s were not intended as sufficient nutritional amounts to establish health in the general populace or to combat disease. So using only a basic multi-vitamin may still leave many people nutritionally malnourished.

Oligomeric Procyanthocyanidins (OPC’s) are a potent combination of bio-flavonoid antioxidants that inhibit cellular free radical damage. Additionally, OPC’s provide anti-inflammatory activity, cardiovascular and joint health, plus maintenance of healthy cholesterol, vascular, and blood glucose levels. OPC’s have been found to improve fertility in both men and women.

Isotonix® produces drinkable and delicious isotonic forms of both of these fertility enhancing supplements.  Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2 provides 5000 iu’s per dose of active and bioavailable vitamin D3 enhanced with vitamin K2.

Isotonix OPC-3® contains the only isotonic form of Pycnogenol® in the world. Pycnogenol® is a patented form of French maritime pine bark. A 2002 published study found sperm mobility was increased by 38% after just 90 days of supplementation with Pycnogenol®.

An isotonic formula dramatically increases nutrient delivery into the small intestine, which in turn improves the rate of absorption by as much as 95%! Drinking these nutrients in an isotonic form requires far less digestive effort and delivers more value than typical liquid, capsule, or tablet forms.

Rapid absorption, easy digestion, and great taste are just a few reasons why Isotonix® supplements, including the Isotonix® Prenatal Multivitamin and the line of Isotonix® Might-A-Mins Children’s vitamins, are so popular.

New video on Vitamin D shows profound impact on Breast Cancer

This newly aired video shows a striking correlation between breast cancer and vitamin D.

A March 2009 article published in the Archives of Internal Medicine explored the dramatic decrease of vitamin D in the overall population from 2001 to 2004. Seventy five percent of adults have insufficient levels of vitamin D. In addition, a significant number of teenagers, young children, and even 40% of infants have been found to be seriously low as well. Inadequate levels of vitamin D have also been measured in 50-80% of pregnant women, even though over 90% of those tested were using a prenatal vitamin.

Supplementation and dietary changes are advised to increase blood serum levels of vitamin D rather than more sun exposure according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

A study of Hawaiian skateboarders (who tended not to use sunscreen) validated this recommendation. Even in this group, 51% had significantly low levels of vitamin D. This is noteworthy considering that just 30 minutes of sunlight on the skin produces approximately 10,000 iu’s of vitamin D in the body.

Healthy adults utilized about 4000 iu’s of vitamin D daily. The Vitamin D Council suggests that supplementing with up to 10,000 iu’s daily of vitamin D3 is very safe for most people.

The bottom line conclusion is: “Current recommendations for vitamin D supplementation are inadequate to address the growing epidemic of vitamin D insufficiency.” – 2009 March, Archive of Internal Medicine

Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2 provides 5000 iu’s of cholecalciferol (a bioavailable form of vitamin D3) plus 45 mcg of vitamin K2 in a drinkable isotonic form.

Check the Chart for the Amounts of Vitamin D that can Help Prevent Disease

woman-with-chart3Have you ever wondered exactly what a vitamin is? A vitamin is an organic compound which is needed by an organism for it’s life, growth, or metabolism and must be acquired via food or environmental sources.

Vitamin D is a very unique vitamin because it can be derived from food and sunlight. There is only one natural form of Vitamin D which is D3. However this naturally occurring form has three different names:

  • Cholecalciferol – the form of D3 produced when sunlight lingers on bare skin and also available in supplement form.
  • Calcidiol – a hormone precursor created in the blood from cholecalciferol. Vitamin D tests check calcidiol levels in the blood.
  • Calcitriol– a hormone created in the kidneys from calcidiol and cholecalciferol with significant cancer-fighting abilities.

Many people who have had their Vitamin D levels tested are then written prescriptions for Vitamin D2.  Vitamin D2 is called ergocalciferol or calciferol. Vitamin D2 is an inactive form created from fungus and, unlike D3,  is not naturally occurring to the human body. The reduced bioavailability of Vitamin D2 makes it much more difficult for the human body to utilize.

Adequate amounts of Vitamin D3 have been shown to dramatically reduce serious health risks.  The following chart provided by GrassRootsHealth.org shows specific correlations between measured levels of Vitamin D3 and deduced incidents of disease and cancer including:

You'll be amazed at what Vitamin K can do!

Vitamin K is beginning to emerge as a “must have” vitamin due to it’s outstanding benefits.

There are two primary forms of vitamin K called K1 and K2.  It is important to distinguish between these two because many reports that have been published on vitamin K are actually discussing vitamin K1.

K1 is found in green, leafy vegetables and is also called phylloquinone. Vitamin K2, on the other hand, is found in dairy products, eggs and organ meats.  Vitamin K2 is also known as menaquinone.

Menaquinone (vitamin K2) is produced by intestinal flora and the use of antibiotics will destroy it.  So if you have used antibiotics, you probably need K2.

K2 is impressing the nutritional world by showing results in dealing with:

Vitamin D – you probably need more of the "sunshine vitamin"

The future’s so bright for this super nutrient, it really is going to need shades! Formerly, it seemed like we only heard warnings about too much sun exposure. So we heeded recommendations to use sunscreen to protect us from damage to our skin which could make us look older or give us skin cancer.

Now doctors are discovering that the majority of sun6adults and children are not getting enough vitamin D and it is contributing to poor health, so they are recommending supplementing with this vitamin for good reason. Lack of vitamin D has been linked to a wide variety of illness and disease, including:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Tuberculosis
  • Low back pain
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Birth defects
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Seasonal affective disorder
  • Periodontal disease

Vitamin D also encourages muscle development. Recent studies done at the University of Manchester have determined that young girls (12-14 years) who were supplemented with vitamin D demonstrated more muscular strength and explosive power.

When selecting a vitamin D supplement bear in mind that D3 is superior to D2 due to it’s bioavailability.  The best quality vitamin D supplement that I know of is Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2.  Isotonix® D includes a synergistic vitamin known as K2 which, in additional to bone health, promotes vascular integrity. Because this product is an isotonic formula, up to 95% of the nutrients are absorbed and enter into the blood stream just minutes after drinking it.

Among other things, Vitamin D3 significantly improves calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 supports the transfer of calcium into bone versus into arteries. Consequently, Vitamin D3 should ideally always be taken with Vitamin K2.

The Vitamin D Council recommends 5000 IU’s of Vitamin D3 daily. Isotonix Vitamin D3 with K2 contains 5000 IU’s of Vitamin D3 along with 45 mcg’s of K2 per dose.

Getting More Glutathione and Antioxidant Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

The elusive nature of multiple sclerosis has been a source of clinical studies for years.  Researchers at the VU reaching-manUniversity Medical Center in Amsterdam released the results of a study treating 14 multiple sclerosis patients with a combination of antioxidants and other nerve-protecting agents.  The treatment resulted in reductions of relapses by two to three fold, plus decreases in corticosteroid medications.

The study concluded that oxidative stress can be counteracted by naturally occurring antioxidant enzymes which go on to provide protection against future oxidative damage to cells and tissue.

Glutathione is a naturally occuring antioxidant which is produced within the cells of our bodies providing protection against toxins.  Lack of glutathione is seen in virtually every instance of disease, including multiple sclerosis.

Glutathione can only be internally generated, therefore it is important to ingest supplements which will stimulate glutathione production.  Vitamin D3, vitamin K, pycnogenolalpha-lipoic acid, curcumin, resveratrol, B vitamins, and L-tryptophan all stimulate the cellular production of glutathione.

You Need An Active Form of Vitamin D

If you have poor bone density, your health care provider has probably suggested supplementing with calcium and vitamin D.  The reason is that calcium is only 10-15% absorbed unless it has the benefitrunning-men2 of vitamin D to facilitate it.

The typical form of vitamin D used for most supplements is D2.  Vitamin D2 is classified as inactive.  An inactive form of a vitamin must be metabolized before it can be accessed, which requires considerable metabolic energy.  A metabolically active vitamin can be rapidly utilized by the body and requires very little energy expenditure.

Vitamin D3 is an active form of this essential nutrient.

Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2 is unique in providing vitamin D3 in an isotonic state, which allows it to be 95% absorbed.  It also incorporates isotonic vitamin K2.

K2 is, once again, metabolically active.  Most supplements use the inactive form known as K1.  K1 is not advised for people using statin drugs due to it’s blood-thinning characteristics.  On the other hand, K2 has no such behavior.  In fact, K2 mediates a condition that can occur during calcium supplementation known as the “calcium paradox”.

The calcium paradox occurs when calcium is stored in the arteries instead of bones.  This can create dangerous calcification and compromised cardiovascular health.  K2 acts like an internal guide directing calcium to the bones and away from arteries and veins.

Combining D3 and K2 into in isotonic form is synergistically brilliant!  I know of no better way of absorbing of these two very important vitamins.
