60 Minutes reports on Resveratrol research

Last night, 60 Minutes aired a segment on resveratrol and the promise that it holds for extending life and reducing or preventing the diseases of old age.  60 Minutes chose to focus exclusively on the pharmaceutical research leading to an eventual drug–that Galaxo Smith Kline will patent and profit from.  They also only mentioned the research by Sirtris when there has been published studies and other significant research going on all over the globe and at major universities.

This is disappointing considering that you can get resveratrol today and start receiving the benefits immediately.  It makes me wonder if Dr. Sinclair agreed to be interviewed as long as 60 Minutes didn’t mention any of the other readily-available and natural alternatives.

What Makes Isotonix® Resveratrol Special?

Resveratrol is a Targeted Non-toxic Treatment for Several Cancer Types

resveratrolFor five years Dr. Arthur Polan from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine has studied the intriguing way that resveratrol successfully destroys difficult to treat cancers without damaging healthy tissue.

Conventional toxic cancer treatments run the risk of permanent damage to vital organs.  Resveratrol offers the promise of effective non-toxic treatment for babies and children afflicted by a nervous system cancer called neuroblastoma.

The delicate nature of the eye poses another conventional treatment challenge.  Ocular melanoma starts in the colored portion of the eye and toxic anti-cancer treatments can destroy the surrounding healthy tissue.  Resveratrol distinguishes between the cancerous and normal cells allowing targeted treatment of this complex organ.  The same applies in skin and breast cancers.

With further study, resveratrol may soon take a place alongside other proven plant based cancer protocols like taxol and etopside.

Antioxidants Highly Effective in Fighting Oral Diseases

man-with-dentistTwo common periodontal diseases were found to respond favorably to the potent antioxidants found in grape seed. Periodontitis is a serious condition that destroys the soft tissue and bone supporting the teeth.  Thirty to fifty percent of Americans suffer from this disease making it the second most common in the world.

Gingivitas and fusobacterium are types of unhealthy bacteria which can grow in the mouth.  Gingivitis left unchecked can develop in to a very serious disease called Trench Mouth.  Fusobacterium is a pathogen that sometimes presents after contracting strep.  Fusobacterium can develop into a very dangerous condition called Lemierre’s disease.

Gingivitas and fusobacterium thrive in plaque, which is a complex bacteria-laden environment called biofilm.  Biofilm serves as a protective agent for the unhealthy bacteria allowing it to thrive and reproduce.  The biofilm accelerates the inflammatory response, which causes a massive release of free radicals on a cellular level.

A 2008 study conducted by Food Chemistry demonstrated that the powerful antioxidants in grape seed were very beneficial because of their anti-bacterial properties and suppression of the free radical cascade.

Isotonix OPC-3® is a synergistic blend of antioxidants (including grape seed extract) that has been clinically proven to positive improve red and white blood cells mobility and suppress free radicals for a full 72 hours after ingesting.

Resveratrol, Genistein & Quercetin Destroy Human Fat Cells

love-handlesA study by the Journal of Medicinal Food found that combining resveratrol, genistein and quercetin in relatively low concentrations produced apoptosis (cell death) in human fat cells.

Studies using large amounts of resveratrol alone did not generate these intriguing results.

Resveratrol, genistein and quercetin all belong to a class of phytochemicals called flavonoids and are powerful antioxidants.  Exploration in the use of phytochemical applications for obesity and cancer contributes to the growing list of safe and demonstrable benefits derived from antioxidant therapy.

Deciphering Labeled Amounts of Resveratrol

reading-labelsMedia coverage on resveratrol has been popular lately, consequently there are a number of companies promoting their own version of this antioxidant.  One may wonder – what’s the big deal?

Resveratrol, OPC’s and Pycnogenol® are bioflavanoids which are complex organic plant compounds found in various amounts in fruits (and wine), vegetables and certain tree barks.  These bioflavanoids range widely in the amount of active compounds they provide, depending upon how they are processed and delivered (powder, liquid, tablet, etc).  Bioflavanoids counteract oxidative cellular damage and have been shown to reduce  inflammation, suppress free radicals and restore cellular function.  These highly potent antioxidants hold tremendous promise for extending both quantity and quality of life.

Top 10 Health Breakthroughs of 2008

byron_richardsNutrition expert and author, Byron J. Richards nominates his top 10 health breakthroughs of 2008 in an article on NewsWithViews.com.

Here is his list along with a brief summary (click keyword links for related blog posts):

#10 – The Mayo Clinic Places One Foot in the Door of the Real World

The breakthrough here is that the Mayo Clinic actually began acknowledging the value of certain nutritional supplements such as fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids.

#9 – Bone Health Is One Key to Longevity

Good bone health is not just about avoiding osteoporosis, scientists have found that healthy bones contribute to better health in other ways as well.

#8 – Grape Seed Extracts Stop Alzheimer’s Plaque

Brain plaque is the cause of many brain aging symptoms and grape seed extract has been found to prevent its growth.

#7 – Vitamin D for Anything and Everything

New evidence was found regarding vitamin D’s power as a gene-regulating super nutrient.  It turns out that vitamin D can help with a huge array of health issues.  More interesting are Byron’s comments regarding the American Cancer Society and FDA’s reluctance to disseminate the news.

#6 – Resveratrol Turns Back the Clock

Readers of this blog know all about the remarkable research on resveratrol, the compound in red wine that activates the SIRT1 green and in turn, slows the aging process and prevents certain diseases.

#5 – The Digestive Genome Marks the New Frontier of Health

Scientists are learning more about how the contaminants and flora in our intestinal tract influence the health of our entire body in ways we didn’t previously understand.

#4 – The Changing World of Fat, Cholesterol, and Heart Disease

It is not just about reducing “bad” cholesterol and increasing “good” cholesterol anymore.  There is a whole new concept of Cholesterol health that contributes to true cardiovascular health.

#3 – How Much BDNF is In Your Bank Account?

Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) has been found to be a key to nerve and brain development.  It turns out that fish oil, blueberries, curcumin, and pantethine all help boost the production of BDNF.

#2 – Run for Your Life

New research this year proves that running is not only great exercise, but is particularly helpful for people over 50.

#1 – Thyroid Health is for Everyone

The latest research on thyroid function shows that even a slightly malfunctioning thyroid is directly related to increased mortality, fatal heart disease, elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, risk of breast cancer, Alzheimer’s risk, and many other issues.  How do you keep your thyroid healthy?  A cleaner diet, exercise, and antioxidants.

Resveratrol reduces internal scaring

An article published in the April 2008 edition of Pediatric Surgery International demonstrates that resveratrol can reduce reduce inflammation resulting from burn and also reduce the formation of scars. Researchers took a few dozen rats and induced caustic burns in the esophagus. Another group of rats also had induction of the esophageal burns but were supplemented with resveratrol. It was found that the resveratrol group had significantly less inflammation, swelling, and tissue necrosis compared to the control group. Additionally, those rats given the resveratrol had less scarring and stricture formation.

Pycnogenol selectively targets malignant ovarian cancer cells

Researchers at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine tested Pycnogenol on ovarian cancer cells and found that Pycnogenol induced apoptosis in the cancer cells, causing them to die, while not affecting normal ovarian cells at all.  This selectivity is very significant since it means that Pycnogenol may be useful as a chemopreventive agent against cancer.

I think that Pycnogenol, grape seed extract, resveratrol, curcumin and other natural substances are part of a new wave of preventative medicine that will significantly improve our health and extend our lives in the future.  Unfortunately, many medical professionals are not well informed about these alternatives and thus don’t recommend them to patients (or worse, suggest that they are not worth trying).  Instead, often the standard approach is only prescribing pharmaceutical substances that treat the disease after it is diagnosed.

Staying aware, and up-to-date, with ongoing research in holistic approaches can often work in concert with traditional treatments. Choosing the best from these two worlds is (in my opinion) the most intelligent approach.

What makes Isotonix Resveratrol special?

I’ve posted several articles and studies about the remarkable effects of resveratrol, the compound in red wine (that is believed to be the answer to the “french paradox“), along with a link to Market America’s Isotonix® Resveratrol product.

With the increased awareness of the benefits of resveratrol, there are dozens of products popping up to cash in on the news including resveratrol beer!

So what makes Isotonix® Resveratrol different than all the others?  Quite a bit actually.

Isotonix® Resveratrol is the only resveratrol product that is isotonic-capable, which means that when it is dissolved in water it becomes isotonic.  Isotonic is a chemical state that means “same pressure” or “same concentration”.  The levels of dissolved solids in an isotonic solution match the fluids in the human body and are thus readily absorbed in the small intestine while retaining almost all of it’s nutritive value.

Isotonix® Resveratrol contains Resveravine®, a patented extract from Bio Serae Laboratories, that contains both trans-resveratrol and e-viniferin.  This synergistic combination has been shown in clinical studies to be more effective that regular resveratrol.

The following chart shows the effectiveness of various antioxidants, including resveratrol and Resveravine®, at inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells.  Resveravine® is the red bar.

In another study, Resveravine® was found to be more effective at protecting LDL from free-radical oxidation damage than resveratrol and other antioxidants.

BioVin® Advanced

Isotonix® Resveratrol also contains BioVin Advanced®, a combination of resveratrol from French red wine, other wine polyphenols, and proanthocyanidins (OPCs).  If you’ve read the other posts on this forum about OPCs, you know what a powerful combination this is.

The final active ingredient of Isotonix® Resveratrol is VitaBlue™, a patented blueberry extract made from North American wild blueberries.  Blueberries have long been touted as a potent antioxidant, but also contain a compound called pterostilben, a relative to resveratrol that has been shown to have anti-cancer, cholesterol reduction, and cognitive improvement effects.  VitaBlue™ also provides anthocyanins (12.5%), polyphenolics (40%), and has an extremely high total ORAC value of 6500 units per gram.

The combination of Resveravine®, BioVin® Advanced, VitaBlue™, and isotonic capability make Isotonix® Resveratrol an extremely potent and highly bioavailable form of resveratrol that is unique in the industry.

Grape seed extract may help Alzheimer’s

Grape seed extract is showing potential as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related memory loss. A study by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City, found that the extract prevented the build-up of amyloid plaques, large protein molecules that interfere with brain function. Amyloid plaques are considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, but the truth is, they’re found in most older brains. People with Alzheimer’s just have more of them.

Ironically, the Mt. Sinai study explored the possibility of of developing “wine mimetic pills” that could replace a glass of wine for therapeutic purposes, but SHOP.COM (powered by Market America) already has two products in its Isotonix line that contain the most potent red wine compounds:
