Getting More Glutathione and Antioxidant Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

The elusive nature of multiple sclerosis has been a source of clinical studies for years.  Researchers at the VU reaching-manUniversity Medical Center in Amsterdam released the results of a study treating 14 multiple sclerosis patients with a combination of antioxidants and other nerve-protecting agents.  The treatment resulted in reductions of relapses by two to three fold, plus decreases in corticosteroid medications.

The study concluded that oxidative stress can be counteracted by naturally occurring antioxidant enzymes which go on to provide protection against future oxidative damage to cells and tissue.

Glutathione is a naturally occuring antioxidant which is produced within the cells of our bodies providing protection against toxins.  Lack of glutathione is seen in virtually every instance of disease, including multiple sclerosis.

Glutathione can only be internally generated, therefore it is important to ingest supplements which will stimulate glutathione production.  Vitamin D3, vitamin K, pycnogenolalpha-lipoic acid, curcumin, resveratrol, B vitamins, and L-tryptophan all stimulate the cellular production of glutathione.

Antioxidants Reverse the Effects of Diabetic Neuropathy

Several studies have shown neuropathy symptoms such as pain, numbness, burning and prickling sensations significantly improved after subjects suffering from diabetes were given antioxidants.

Dr. Feldman, Professor of Neurology at the University of Michigan, noted that excessive sugar in the blood plasma creates free radicals which damage the DNA in nervous system cells.  Oxygen transport in the DNA is halted by the build up of free radicals.  This resulting DNA damage is a major contributing factor in diabetic neuropathy.

The key to counteracting free radicals is introducing antioxidants.

Remember, free radicals are charged molecules that attack neighboring molecules in order to steal their electrons.  Free radicals punch through cell membranes and tear apart DNA structures in these neighboring cells.  This, in turn, creates more damaged cells which generate more free radicals and the wave of cellular destruction continues.  This process is a form of oxidation or oxidative stress.

Antioxidants prevent and inhibit oxidation.

Protecting sensitive nerve cells from free radical damage is a safe, natural, and effective means of coping with neuropathy while repairing existing oxidative stress.

Unique Vitamins and Antioxidants for Your Pets

After experiencing the benefits of potent antioxidants like Isotonix OPC-3® and Glucosatrin®, people petitioned for the similar products for their dogs and cats.  In response to those requests, a line of products called PetHealth™ was created.

dogPetHealth™ has unique vitamins, antioxidants and safe and effective grooming products that your dog or cat will thrive on.  In particular, the PetHealth™ OPC with Glucosamine also contains Pycnogenol® and is an amazing anti-inflammatory for animals that are experiencing joint pain and/or age related issues.

A friend of mine has a dog that had been suffering from chronic ear infections for over 6 months.  The vet had tried a variety of medications including several rounds of prednisone which only worked temporarily.  At her wits end she called me and asked about the PetHealth™ OPC.  I told her that steroids work by suppressing normal immune response which inhibits swelling and inflammation.  Unfortunately that suppression is accomplished through a massive free radical release.  So basically, the steroids temporarily reduce inflammation, but long term they create more cellular damage.

Apparently her dog had scratched his ears until they were bleeding, so my friend decided to try the PetHealth™ OPC rather than another round of steroids.  After giving her dog double doses, twice a day, she noticed improvement in less than a week.  After two and a half weeks her dog had healthy ears again and he was bounding up stairs that he hadn’t been able to climb since he was a much younger dog!

If you don’t really like the overpowering floral scent in a lot of dog shampoos, try the PetHealth™ Hypoallergenic or Medicated Shampoo.  These shampoos are sulfate-free, phosphate-free, alcohol-free, preservative-free and paraben-free leaving the dog with a silky coat and a subtle woodsy lavender scent.

Deciphering Labeled Amounts of Resveratrol

reading-labelsMedia coverage on resveratrol has been popular lately, consequently there are a number of companies promoting their own version of this antioxidant.  One may wonder – what’s the big deal?

Resveratrol, OPC’s and Pycnogenol® are bioflavanoids which are complex organic plant compounds found in various amounts in fruits (and wine), vegetables and certain tree barks.  These bioflavanoids range widely in the amount of active compounds they provide, depending upon how they are processed and delivered (powder, liquid, tablet, etc).  Bioflavanoids counteract oxidative cellular damage and have been shown to reduce  inflammation, suppress free radicals and restore cellular function.  These highly potent antioxidants hold tremendous promise for extending both quantity and quality of life.

OPC-3 outperforms statin drugs in reducing C-Reactive Proteins

A clinical study of Isotonix OPC-3® showed a 52.1% reduction in C-Reactive proteins in blood plasma compared to a 13-14% reduction when using statin drugs.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is currently the only predictive marker which can forecast the likelihood of a heart attack.  Elevated CRP can also be triggered by infection, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and other sources of inflammation.

Pycnogenol selectively targets malignant ovarian cancer cells

Researchers at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine tested Pycnogenol on ovarian cancer cells and found that Pycnogenol induced apoptosis in the cancer cells, causing them to die, while not affecting normal ovarian cells at all.  This selectivity is very significant since it means that Pycnogenol may be useful as a chemopreventive agent against cancer.

I think that Pycnogenol, grape seed extract, resveratrol, curcumin and other natural substances are part of a new wave of preventative medicine that will significantly improve our health and extend our lives in the future.  Unfortunately, many medical professionals are not well informed about these alternatives and thus don’t recommend them to patients (or worse, suggest that they are not worth trying).  Instead, often the standard approach is only prescribing pharmaceutical substances that treat the disease after it is diagnosed.

Staying aware, and up-to-date, with ongoing research in holistic approaches can often work in concert with traditional treatments. Choosing the best from these two worlds is (in my opinion) the most intelligent approach.

Pycnogenol effective against Leukemia cancer cells

Pycnogenol® is a natural plant extract derived from the bark of French maritime pine trees. A new study by researchers in China tested various doses of Pycnogenol® on several types of human leukemia cancer cell lines.  In every case, Pycnogenol® was found to increase differentiation and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the cancerous cells.

All normal cells are programmed to die at the end of their useful life. This natural process is called apoptosis.  Cancer cells don’t die when they are supposed to and continue to replicate, resulting in abnormal cell development which can turn into tumors.  By inducing apoptosis, Pycnogenol® triggers the suppressed death signal in cancer cells so that they die.

The researchers state “Our data suggest that Pycnogenol® could serve as a potent cancer chemopreventive or chemotherapeutic agent for human leukemia.”

Prior research has shown that grape seed extract and bilberry extract also have cancer-fighting properties. Isotonix OPC-3® is a drinkable isotonic product which contains Pycnogenol®, grape seed extract, and bilberry extract (plus red wine extract and other bioflavanoids). Isotonix OPC-3® is the only product on the market containing isotonic Pycnogenol®. This extremely bioavailable antioxidant formula provides up to 95% rapid absorption and tastes great!

Pycnogenol Reduces Heart Disease Risk in Diabetics

A new study conducted by researchers from the University of Arizona evaluated the affect of Pycnogenol® (a French maritime pine bark extract) on a group of diabetic patients who were also taking blood pressure medication.  The group taking Pycnogenol® had a more stable blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol, and a decrease in fasting blood sugar levels compared to the placebo group.

“These data confirm the hypothesis that Pycnogenol® improves diabetes control, reduces anti-hypertensive medicine use, and may favor a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with Type 2 diabetes,” the researchers wrote.
