An Anthrax Antidote? Read the provocative clinical study and decide

Immune system disorders and deficiencies are legion, encompassing a vast array of disease and illness affecting people all over the world. Maladies resulting from primary and secondary immune deficiencies/disorders include:

Common health challenges where the immune system over or under reacts are:

From antibiotics and surgery to antioxidants and counseling, treatment choices are almost limitless.  The main treatment questions are:  How does it work? Has it been clinically studied? Does it tackle the underlying problem, or does it just mask symptoms?

The gastrointestinal system is crucial to immune function. Over 70% of the immune system is dictated by Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue (GALT) and 80% of the plasma cells responsible for antibody production reside there. This tissue runs from the tonsils through the entire intestinal tract. GALT health equals good health because it’s the foundation and structure of a strong immune system.

Stress can wreak havoc in the GALT. Research funded by the National Research of Health confirmed that stress changes the balance of bacteria in the gut:

“These bacteria affect immune function, and may help explain why stress dysregulates the immune response,” said lead researcher Michael Bailey.

An amazing new product that stimulates healthy GALT and supports robust immunity is Isotonix® Immune.  The primary ingredient in Isotonix® Immune is a patented compound called Wellmune WGP®.

Wellmune WGP® is a natural yeast compound derived from the cell wall of a highly purified, proprietary strain of hypoallergenic baker’s yeast. This link has a series of videos illustrating how Wellmune boosts the ability of immune cells to locate and eliminate dangerous fungus, bacteria and viruses in the body. Dozens of clinical, preclinical and peer-reviewed research testifies to the power and safety of this incredible natural substance.

In a provocative study researchers exposed three groups of mice to a lethal dose of Anthrax in their drinking water. One group was given Wellmune WGP® for 2 days prior to the exposure. Another group had Wellmune WGP® for 8 days prior and the last group had no Wellmune WGP® .

All of the mice with no Wellmune died from Anthrax within 10 days. Fifty percent of the mice with 2 days of Wellmune WGP® survived, and those that died lived much longer. All of the mice that had 8 days of Wellmune WGP® lived. The Wellmune WGP® enabled their immune systems to destroy the deadly Anthrax bacteria in their bodies.

Wonderful – Terrible – Prednisone

Prednisone is a synthetic form of corticosteroid that can be administered in topical, injectable, or oral form. Corticosteroids are a class of steroid’s which act like hormones that are produced by the adrenal gland.

Prednisone is prescribed to very effectively suppress immune system response when treating a variety of inflammatory diseases and disorders. This includes arthritis, eczema, some cancers, irritable bowel symptoms, asthma, allergic reactions, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, chronic pain conditions and many others.

When our bodies are under stress, a natural steroid hormone called cortisol is a released. Cortisol is part of the “fight or flight” response which causes changes to blood pressure, blood sugar, immune and inflammatory response. These changes are not harmful when the body has a chance to recover from the stress inducing event. Stress responses can become very problematic if triggered too frequently.

The immune system cannot operate properly under the influence of excessive cortisol. Impaired immunity leaves the door open to illness and disease. Because prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid it should be used cautiously, infrequently, and sparingly to reduce the likelihood of complications. When used judiciously, it can be a wonderful drug.

However, when prednisone is taken for more than a few weeks, it causes the adrenal gland to shrink, producing fewer natural steroid hormones. That is why discontinuing prednisone and other corticosteroids much be done slowly so that the adrenal gland can return to normal production. Sudden drug withdrawal can trigger dangerous side effects. There are also some terrible possible side effects and complications which can occur when using prednisone:

Wondering if cholesterol lowering drugs are making you stupid?… Study shows they may be

Old Worried GuyThe Wall Street Journal published the first allegations of cholesterol lowering statin drugs being associated with dementia. In the article, Dr. Orli Etingin (vice chairman of medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center) stated that Lipitor “makes women stupid.”

Dr. Etingin was referring to several of her patients using statins that were unable to focus, recall words and displayed other cognitive deficiencies. According to Dr. Etingin, the impairments vanished when use of the statin drug was discontinued and returned when the statins were reintroduced.

Two British experts in Alzheimers and dementia, Louise Morse and Roger Hitchins, write that the most common causes of memory loss they see in both men and women are due to depression, poor nutrition and statin drug use.

Some doctors have suspected that certain cognitive disruptions are triggered when statin drugs (like Simvastatin) cross the blood brain barrier and interfere with the central nervous system. Another possibility is that because the brain is composed largely of cholesterol, lowering cholesterol could slow thought and memory connections. Statins have also been linked to abnormal tau proteins forming in the brain, as seen in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease.

A new study may provide even more disturbing evidence as to the impact statins have on cognitive function.

This fascinating study published July 2008 in Glia by Dr. Steven Goldman and Dr. Fraser Sim discovered that statin drugs inhibit a specific type of brain cell.

These specialized brain cells are called glial progenitor cells. Glial progenitor cells function much like stem cells. They spring into action when the brain has experienced some type of distress and transform into any type of cell needed by the brain. These adaptive cells help restore white matter after strokes, infection, trauma, or inflammation brought on by the aging process, or diseases like multiple sclerosis.

Statins negatively impact glial progenitor cells by switching off their adaptive capabilities. After statin exposure the glial progenitor cells permanently became oligodendrocytes cells.

Absorbing Resveratrol is the Key

Michael J. Fox was recently on Oprah discussing the progress his Parkinson’s research foundation has made lock-and-keyseeking treatments for this degenerative disease. He referenced promising results Dr. Benjamin Wolozin discovered using the grape skin extract known as resveratrol.

In the grant abstract written for Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s Research Foundation, Dr. Wolozin discusses synthetic resveratrol formulas which are under production by the biotech-nology company Sirtris and states: “Despite its popular appeal, resveratrol suffers as a pharmacological compound because it is not absorbed by the body well”.

Fortunately another company has already tackled the absorption issues related to natural compounds like resveratrol and pycnogenol. The company is Isotonix® and they have addressed the human digestive process by providing nutrients in patented natural isotonic solutions. If a vitamin or antioxidant is delivered in an isotonic form, the body can receive maximum value in the shortest amount of time. Providing resveratrol, vitamins and other antioxidants by isotonic delivery is ideal for our digestive systems – natural, gentle, potent and effective.

Isotonix® Resveratrol is a combination of three patented ingredients combined in a synergistic formula.  They are Resveravine®, BioVin®, and VitaBlue®. A detailed description of this amazing combination is chronicled in my post “What makes Isotonix® Resveratrol Special“.

Check the Chart for the Amounts of Vitamin D that can Help Prevent Disease

woman-with-chart3Have you ever wondered exactly what a vitamin is? A vitamin is an organic compound which is needed by an organism for it’s life, growth, or metabolism and must be acquired via food or environmental sources.

Vitamin D is a very unique vitamin because it can be derived from food and sunlight. There is only one natural form of Vitamin D which is D3. However this naturally occurring form has three different names:

  • Cholecalciferol – the form of D3 produced when sunlight lingers on bare skin and also available in supplement form.
  • Calcidiol – a hormone precursor created in the blood from cholecalciferol. Vitamin D tests check calcidiol levels in the blood.
  • Calcitriol– a hormone created in the kidneys from calcidiol and cholecalciferol with significant cancer-fighting abilities.

Many people who have had their Vitamin D levels tested are then written prescriptions for Vitamin D2.  Vitamin D2 is called ergocalciferol or calciferol. Vitamin D2 is an inactive form created from fungus and, unlike D3,  is not naturally occurring to the human body. The reduced bioavailability of Vitamin D2 makes it much more difficult for the human body to utilize.

Adequate amounts of Vitamin D3 have been shown to dramatically reduce serious health risks.  The following chart provided by GrassRootsHealth.org shows specific correlations between measured levels of Vitamin D3 and deduced incidents of disease and cancer including:

Cognitive deterioration may be prevented or reversed with Resveratrol

old-guy-eating-grapesThe aging process, along with several neurodegenerative diseases, causes synaptic deterioration in the brain.  As neurons and brain cells die off, connections are lost impacting learning and memory retention.  Doctors studying Alzheimer’s and other types of age-related dementia are encouraged by a new study on how resveratrol reversed cognitive deterioration in laboratory tests.

In addition to protecting cell health and longevity, SIRT1 is a gene that our bodies trigger when under various types of stress.  SIRT1 activation was initiated in mice that had developed comparable human neurodegenerative diseases.  The mice were treated with resveratrol, which reduced the rate of neuron and cell death and restored learning abilities back to the same level as the normal healthy mice.

“Thus, resveratrol is not only neuroprotective, it also improves cognitive function after severe neurodegeneration,” says Li-Huei Tsai, the research team leader and professor of neuroscience at MIT.

Previously it was thought that resveratrol could not cross the blood brain barrier, however a study done in 2002 indicated otherwise.  In fact, the final summary line stated:  “This study demonstrated for the first time that resveratrol, a polyphenolic antioxidant, can cross the blood-brain barrier and exert protective effects against cerebral ischemic injury.” (An ischemic injury is caused by insufficient oxygen or blood flow).

Resveratrol offers yet another safe and natural benefit that could actually improve cognitive function in cases of neurodegenerative disease.

Resveratrol increases repair and protection of cells by 8 fold

Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant compound found in red wine grape skins and seeds. Resveratrol is also found in various amounts in several other types of plants and acts as a protective agent defending the plant from harmful environmental elements.

Several studies show that resveratrol also enhances human immune function and potential longevity. Well, the news on resveratrol continues to pour in with yet another significant benefit provided by this compound being touted in a new study.

A normal function that cells perform is folding proteins.  When cells misfold proteins and the immune system doesn’t catch them, the misfolded proteins set the stage for trouble.

Cells that experience stress, respond by producing “heat-shock proteins”.  These proteins were called SIRT1. These SIRT1 heat-shock proteins were given that name when it was observed that cells exposed to elevated temperatures generated these special proteins to protect and repair DNA and extend the life of the cell. Cells with SIRT1 activated are stronger, live longer and continue to perform their functions under stress.

Other types of cellular stress like calorie reduction and oxygen-deprivation also triggers SIRT1.  Resveratrol has shown a unique ability to stimulate SIRT1 production by as much as 8 fold without the presence of typical cell stress like heat, food reduction or reduced oxygen.

Resveratrol is plant compound found in grapes that has antioxidant abilities which neutralize free radicals and has demonstrated cancer preventative properties. By triggering SIRT1 production, it holds the potential for increasing life span by protecting cells and inhibiting age related disease.

Neurodegenerative diseases like Type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s all present significant amounts of misfolded protein cellular damage.  When SIRT1 levels fall cells are unable to properly respond to stress and systems of the body start to fail.  This also happens during the aging process.

According to research team leader, Richard I. Morimoto, professor of Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences “When SIRT1 levels are high, you are in a high-protection mode”. Resveratrol contributes to high SIRT1 levels.

“We now have a powerful way to think about addressing neurodegenerative diseases,” said Morimoto. “We have identified a pathway that can be manipulated to alter lifespan. Discovering this new basis for therapeutics is very exciting.”

Vitamin D – you probably need more of the "sunshine vitamin"

The future’s so bright for this super nutrient, it really is going to need shades! Formerly, it seemed like we only heard warnings about too much sun exposure. So we heeded recommendations to use sunscreen to protect us from damage to our skin which could make us look older or give us skin cancer.

Now doctors are discovering that the majority of sun6adults and children are not getting enough vitamin D and it is contributing to poor health, so they are recommending supplementing with this vitamin for good reason. Lack of vitamin D has been linked to a wide variety of illness and disease, including:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Tuberculosis
  • Low back pain
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Birth defects
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Seasonal affective disorder
  • Periodontal disease

Vitamin D also encourages muscle development. Recent studies done at the University of Manchester have determined that young girls (12-14 years) who were supplemented with vitamin D demonstrated more muscular strength and explosive power.

When selecting a vitamin D supplement bear in mind that D3 is superior to D2 due to it’s bioavailability.  The best quality vitamin D supplement that I know of is Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2.  Isotonix® D includes a synergistic vitamin known as K2 which, in additional to bone health, promotes vascular integrity. Because this product is an isotonic formula, up to 95% of the nutrients are absorbed and enter into the blood stream just minutes after drinking it.

Among other things, Vitamin D3 significantly improves calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 supports the transfer of calcium into bone versus into arteries. Consequently, Vitamin D3 should ideally always be taken with Vitamin K2.

The Vitamin D Council recommends 5000 IU’s of Vitamin D3 daily. Isotonix Vitamin D3 with K2 contains 5000 IU’s of Vitamin D3 along with 45 mcg’s of K2 per dose.

Is your Vitamin D level high enough? Check out this Vitamin D Disease Prevention Chart.

Isotonic – a better way of absorbing nutrients

liquidsThe term “isotonic” means “same concentration”. This condition occurs when the amount of dissolved particles inside of a semi-permeable membrane equals the amount of dissolved particles on the outside of that membrane. Body fluids like tears, blood plasma, and lymph all have varying degrees of tonicity.

When we eat food or swallow supplements, the stomach uses muscle contractions and secretes extra fluids (or absorbs excess fluids) until the contents reach an optimum ratio between the solids and liquids. At that point the solution is in an isotonic state and is ready to cross semi-permeable membranes in the small intestine. The amount of energy required to achieve this state varies based on the type of food (or supplement), amount of food, quality and quantity of digestive enzymes, and stomach pH. This digestive process usually takes 6-8 hours.

The unique aspect of products made by Isotonix® is that the digestive process is acknowledged and addressed by providing nutritional supplements that the stomach doesn’t have to work on. Isotonix® nutrients are delivered into the stomach ready to be absorbed because they are already in an isotonic state. Therefore the beneficial elements are immediately available and quickly absorbed.

Getting More Glutathione and Antioxidant Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

The elusive nature of multiple sclerosis has been a source of clinical studies for years.  Researchers at the VU reaching-manUniversity Medical Center in Amsterdam released the results of a study treating 14 multiple sclerosis patients with a combination of antioxidants and other nerve-protecting agents.  The treatment resulted in reductions of relapses by two to three fold, plus decreases in corticosteroid medications.

The study concluded that oxidative stress can be counteracted by naturally occurring antioxidant enzymes which go on to provide protection against future oxidative damage to cells and tissue.

Glutathione is a naturally occuring antioxidant which is produced within the cells of our bodies providing protection against toxins.  Lack of glutathione is seen in virtually every instance of disease, including multiple sclerosis.

Glutathione can only be internally generated, therefore it is important to ingest supplements which will stimulate glutathione production.  Vitamin D3, vitamin K, pycnogenolalpha-lipoic acid, curcumin, resveratrol, B vitamins, and L-tryptophan all stimulate the cellular production of glutathione.
