Curcuminoids found to prevent Rheumatoid Arthritis

Curcuminoids are the group of compounds found in curcumin, derived from turmeric.  Researchers at the Universityarthritis hands of Arizona and University of Kansas tested the effect of several curcuminoids on laboratory animals when arthritis was induced.  They found that the curcuminoids were efficacious in preventing joint inflammation when treatment was started before the onset of joint inflammation.

Curcumin has been used for centuries as a treatment for inflammation, but this is the the first in vivo (living organism) study on its effect on arthritis.

Curcumin may treat intractable brain tumor

The January 2008 issue of Life Extension Magazine reported that recent research has found curcumin may be a useful adjutant therapy in the treatment of glioblastoma, a difficult-to-treat form of brain cancer.  Malignant gliomas are aggressive tumors due to their resistance to chemotherapy and radiation.

The researches examined the effect of curcumin on various human and rodent glioma cells lines in the laboratory.  Curcumin reduced the survival of cancerous cells and also made the cells more sensitive to chemotherapy agents and radiation.

Grape seed extract may help Alzheimer’s

Grape seed extract is showing potential as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related memory loss. A study by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City, found that the extract prevented the build-up of amyloid plaques, large protein molecules that interfere with brain function. Amyloid plaques are considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, but the truth is, they’re found in most older brains. People with Alzheimer’s just have more of them.

Ironically, the Mt. Sinai study explored the possibility of of developing “wine mimetic pills” that could replace a glass of wine for therapeutic purposes, but SHOP.COM (powered by Market America) already has two products in its Isotonix line that contain the most potent red wine compounds:

Several studies document curcumin’s cancer fighting properties

boxingScientists are discovering that curcumin, and ingredient of the spice turmeric, has properties that fight cancer.  Most of the studies are in the lab using cancer cells or laboratory mice and controlled doses of curcumin, but the findings are very exciting.

Curcumin reduces heart enlargement and may prevent heart failure

Fresh turmeric roots

Curcumin is a natural ingredient in the spice turmeric, which has been used for centuries in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine. Western science has only recently discovered its benefits.

Researchers at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre of the Toronto General Hospital have discovered that “curcumin prevents and reverses murine cardiac hypertophy,” which is enlargement of the heart. It also was able to restore heart function and reduce scar formation.

According to cardiologist Dr. Peter Liu, curcumin works by shutting off one of the major switches right at the chromosome source where the enlargement and scarring genes are being turned on.

Resveratrol found to halt growth of pancreatic cancer cells

In a study published in the journal Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, researches at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that resveratrol can weaken pancreatic cancer cells and increase their vulnerability to chemotherapy.

Pancreatic cancer is unusually resistant to chemotherapy because the pancreas is continually producing digestive enzymes that flush away chemotherapy chemicals.  The resveratrol causes the cancer cells to malfunction so that they are not able to flush away the chemicals.  This, combined with resveratrol’s documented affect of inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) contributed to the death of the cancer cells.

While this study does not prove that taking resveratrol will produce the same effects, it is yet another study that helps us understand its effect on living cells.

Anthocyanins-rich foods may reduce risk of colon cancer

A study conducted at Ohio State University tested the effect of a variety of foods that contain high-levels of anthocyanins on colon cancer cells. Anthocyanins are pigments that have high antioxidant properties. The foods tested were purple corn, chokeberry, bilberry, purple carrot, grape, radish, and elderberry. Purple corn was found to have the largest inhibitory effect on the cancer cells, followed by chokeberry and bilberry.

Not getting enough purple corn in your diet? consider Isotonix OPC-3®, which contains bilberry extract and grape seed extract, which has also been found to inhibit colon cancer cell growth in the lab.

Pycnogenol works better than surgery for knee osteoarthritis

Several recent articles have shows that Pycnogenol® significantly reduces pain and inflammation of Osteoarthritis (20% in knee study, 56% in arthritis study). The studies also found that pain and inflammation stayed low for 2-4 weeks after discontinuation, indication that Pycnogenol® actually helped the joints to recover and did not just mask the symptoms.

In contrast, the New England Journal of Medicine has found that surgery has been found to provide virtually no benefit to patients.

Resveratrol kills human cancer cells in the lab

scientist1A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry on 7/26/2008 found that exposing malignant cancer cells to resveratrol for 24 hours resulted in those cells dying at 3 times the rate of normal cells while normal cells subsequently regrew 5 times faster than the cancer cells. The study concludes that resveratrol has the effect of selectively targeting cancer cells and directs them to “irreversible cell death”.

In-vitro lab results do not infer similar results in live human subjects, but these are exciting results.
