An Anthrax Antidote? Read the provocative clinical study and decide

Immune system disorders and deficiencies are legion, encompassing a vast array of disease and illness affecting people all over the world. Maladies resulting from primary and secondary immune deficiencies/disorders include:

Common health challenges where the immune system over or under reacts are:

From antibiotics and surgery to antioxidants and counseling, treatment choices are almost limitless.  The main treatment questions are:  How does it work? Has it been clinically studied? Does it tackle the underlying problem, or does it just mask symptoms?

The gastrointestinal system is crucial to immune function. Over 70% of the immune system is dictated by Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue (GALT) and 80% of the plasma cells responsible for antibody production reside there. This tissue runs from the tonsils through the entire intestinal tract. GALT health equals good health because it’s the foundation and structure of a strong immune system.

Stress can wreak havoc in the GALT. Research funded by the National Research of Health confirmed that stress changes the balance of bacteria in the gut:

“These bacteria affect immune function, and may help explain why stress dysregulates the immune response,” said lead researcher Michael Bailey.

An amazing new product that stimulates healthy GALT and supports robust immunity is Isotonix® Immune.  The primary ingredient in Isotonix® Immune is a patented compound called Wellmune WGP®.

Wellmune WGP® is a natural yeast compound derived from the cell wall of a highly purified, proprietary strain of hypoallergenic baker’s yeast. This link has a series of videos illustrating how Wellmune boosts the ability of immune cells to locate and eliminate dangerous fungus, bacteria and viruses in the body. Dozens of clinical, preclinical and peer-reviewed research testifies to the power and safety of this incredible natural substance.

In a provocative study researchers exposed three groups of mice to a lethal dose of Anthrax in their drinking water. One group was given Wellmune WGP® for 2 days prior to the exposure. Another group had Wellmune WGP® for 8 days prior and the last group had no Wellmune WGP® .

All of the mice with no Wellmune died from Anthrax within 10 days. Fifty percent of the mice with 2 days of Wellmune WGP® survived, and those that died lived much longer. All of the mice that had 8 days of Wellmune WGP® lived. The Wellmune WGP® enabled their immune systems to destroy the deadly Anthrax bacteria in their bodies.

What is your Gout trying to tell you?

The five most common forms of arthritis are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gout
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lupus

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, gout is one of the most painful forms of rheumatoid arthritis. Gout affects approximately 3.9% of the US population and has been steadily rising as more and more American’s struggle with obesity and hypertension. Statistically, more men are afflicted with this condition than women because men have higher uric acid levels in their blood than women.

There are four types of gout:

  1. Asymptomatic (without symptoms) Hyperuricemia – Elevated levels of uric acid only. No other symptoms.
  2. Gouty Arthritis or Acute Gout – Often triggered by aggravating diet, stress, alcohol or another illness. Attacks usually happen at night and subside within 3-10 days with or without treatment.
  3. Interval or Intercritical Gout – The symptom-free time between acute gout episodes. These intervals tend to get shorter and shorter over time.
  4. Chronic Tophaceous Gout – Usually develops over a long period of time (like 10 years) with possible permanent damage to the joints or kidneys.

Purines are natural chemical compounds found virtually every type of food. Here is a short video on purines in relationship to gout. Usually the body eliminates uric acid via the kidneys by dissolving it into urine. When excessive uric acid builds up and the kidneys can’t keep up, urate crystals can form. These sharp urate crystals can develop in the kidneys, joints or tissue surrounding joints, causing severe pain and inflammation.

A 12-year study on foods related to gout recommended primarily avoiding high-purine foods like hearts, herring, mussels, yeast, smelt, sardines, and sweetbreads. Moderately-high purine foods are game birds, mutton, veal, bacon, liver, salmon, trout, haddock and scallops.

Risk factors for gout include genetics, obesity, excessive weight gain (especially during youth) moderate or binge drinking, high blood pressure, abnormal kidney function, heart disease, joint injury, chemotherapy, diuretics, some medications (including low-dose aspirin, steroids and immunosuppressive drugs).

Use of steroids and pain-killers may temporary alleviate symptoms of gout, but a diagnosis of gout is a good indication that systemic problems have been brewing for a long time and some lifestyle and comprehensive nutritional changes need to take place.

Improving kidney function and reducing C-reactive proteins (an indication of systemic inflammation) are two key aspects to preventing gout. If you’re a bit fuzzy on what kidneys do, here is a quick three minute video on the critical role kidneys play in filtering the blood and supplying vital nutrients to the body.

Reducing or eliminating high-purine foods would clearly be a smart way to reduce the burden on the kidneys.  Supporting the body’s overall digestive health would also help kidney function and reduce uric acid imbalances. Drinking lots of fresh water and eating a high-alkaline diet full of fresh raw foods and fiber meets those objectives.

Studies have shown that many supplements can benefits gout-sufferers by improving kidney function, reducing systemic inflammation caused by free-radical damage and aiding in digestion. Click on the name of each supplement type below to see how it can address gout related problems:

OPC-3 outperforms statin drugs in reducing C-Reactive Proteins

A clinical study of Isotonix OPC-3® showed a 52.1% reduction in C-Reactive proteins in blood plasma compared to a 13-14% reduction when using statin drugs.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is currently the only predictive marker which can forecast the likelihood of a heart attack.  Elevated CRP can also be triggered by infection, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and other sources of inflammation.

Grapeseed Extract Kills 76% of Leukemia Cancer Cells in 24 Hours

A new study by researchers at the University of Kentucky has found that when Leukemia cancer cells are exposed to grape seed extract in the lab, 76% of the cells die through apoptosis in just 24 hours. Normal cells were not harmed. Apoptosis is the natural process of programmed cell death. All cells are supposed to undergo apoptosis when they become damaged or simply reach the end of their useful lives. One of the reasons that cancer cells grow and multiply is that apoptosis is not triggered when it is supposed to be.

The study was published in the January 1st issue of Clinical Cancer Research.

A couple of months ago, Chinese scientists performed a similar study with Pycnogenol® and leukemia with virtually identical results. The evidence is mounting that OPCs and other strong antioxidants have potent anti-cancer properties. Isotonix OPC-3® contains both Pycnogenol® and grape seed extract, plus other OPCs.

OPC-3 prevents arterial disfunction after eating a fatty meal

holiday-feastIt’s the holiday season, which means lots of food, not all of it healthy. Did you know that when you eat a fatty meal, the endothelial layer of your blood vessels becomes less effective at regulating blood-flow. This is why a high-fat diet can lead to hypertension and arterial sclerosis.

A new study by Dr Tom Barringer, Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Health at Carolinas Medical Center, evaluates the benefit of isotonic bioflavonoid supplementation in preventing impairment of endothelial dysfunction induced by a fatty meal. The researchers used OPC-3® with its high concentration of bioflavonoids. Using a sophisticated technique, Reactive Hyperemia Peripheral Arterial Tonometry in healthy adults, his research confirms that a fatty meal will transiently induce endothelial dysfunction which can then be protected by the ingestion of a complex bioflavonoid supplementation.

Dr. Barringer concludes:

“Our results indicate that the flavonoid supplement OPC-3® can reduce the acute impairment in endothelial function a high-fat meal. These findings do not imply that all the detrimental effects of a high saturated fat meal are neutralized by taking a flavonoid supplement. The standardized high-fat meal however is a convenient, reproducible means to induce endothelial impairment in healthy volunteers who otherwise have normal endothelial function as proven by their normal fasting values.”

Pycnogenol selectively targets malignant ovarian cancer cells

Researchers at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine tested Pycnogenol on ovarian cancer cells and found that Pycnogenol induced apoptosis in the cancer cells, causing them to die, while not affecting normal ovarian cells at all.  This selectivity is very significant since it means that Pycnogenol may be useful as a chemopreventive agent against cancer.

I think that Pycnogenol, grape seed extract, resveratrol, curcumin and other natural substances are part of a new wave of preventative medicine that will significantly improve our health and extend our lives in the future.  Unfortunately, many medical professionals are not well informed about these alternatives and thus don’t recommend them to patients (or worse, suggest that they are not worth trying).  Instead, often the standard approach is only prescribing pharmaceutical substances that treat the disease after it is diagnosed.

Staying aware, and up-to-date, with ongoing research in holistic approaches can often work in concert with traditional treatments. Choosing the best from these two worlds is (in my opinion) the most intelligent approach.

Pycnogenol effective against Leukemia cancer cells

Pycnogenol® is a natural plant extract derived from the bark of French maritime pine trees. A new study by researchers in China tested various doses of Pycnogenol® on several types of human leukemia cancer cell lines.  In every case, Pycnogenol® was found to increase differentiation and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the cancerous cells.

All normal cells are programmed to die at the end of their useful life. This natural process is called apoptosis.  Cancer cells don’t die when they are supposed to and continue to replicate, resulting in abnormal cell development which can turn into tumors.  By inducing apoptosis, Pycnogenol® triggers the suppressed death signal in cancer cells so that they die.

The researchers state “Our data suggest that Pycnogenol® could serve as a potent cancer chemopreventive or chemotherapeutic agent for human leukemia.”

Antioxidant levels significantly lower in fibromyalgia patients

sore-neckFibromyalgia is one of those challenging conditions that modern medicine has yet to find a definitive cause of or effective treatment for.  One theorized contributor is oxidative stress, also known as free radical damage.  A group of researchers set out to examine the balance of oxidants and antioxidants in women diagnosed with fibromyalgia compared to healthy women.  They evaluated 85 women with fibromyalgia and 80 healthy women matched in age, weight, and height.

After measuring the oxidant and antioxidant levels in all women, they found a clear correlation indicating that those with fibromyalgia had more free radicals and fewer antioxidants in their bodies.  The results don’t indicate whether the imbalance is a cause or an effect, but the researchers believe that it is very likely that free radicals are a contributing factor to the disease.

People with fibromyalgia can increase their antioxidant levels by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and  supplementing their diet with antioxidants.

New research reaffirms cardiovascular benefits of grapes

New articles and research add to the growing body of evidence that the polyphenols and antioxidants in grapes can reduce blood pressure, improve heart function, and reduce “bad” cholesterol.

In an article in the November issue of Nutrition Research, authors Wayne R. Leifert, Ph.D., and Mahinda Y. Abeywardena, Ph.D. found that through their antioxidant effects, grape polyphenols help to slow or prevent cell damage caused by oxidation. Polyphenols decrease oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol)—a key step in the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Grape polyphenols also have other protective effects on the heart and blood vessels, including actions to reduce blood clotting, abnormal heart rhythms, and blood vessel narrowing.

Another study at the University of Michigan examined rats who were fed a high-salt diet and suffered from hypertension and higher risk of heart failure.  They supplemented the diets of some of the rats with grape powder containing grape skin and seed extracts.  The mice fed the grape powder had lower blood pressure, better heart function, reduced inflammation throughout their bodies, and fewer signs of heart muscle damage.

The researches stated, “Although there are many natural compounds in the grape powder itself that may have an effect, the things that we think are having an effect against the hypertension may be the flavonoids – either by direct antioxidant effects, by indirect effects on cell function, or both.”
