Osteoporosis Medications linked to Jaw Bone Disease

jawOne out of 25 users of Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs may be at risk of serious jaw bone deterioration. The report was conducted by the Journal of the American Dental Association .

The specific the jaw bone problem which can develop from using these drugs is a disease called “osteonecrosis” or “ONJ”. ONJ is linked to the temporary or permanent loss of blood to bone tissue, which can lead to tissue death and eventually bone collapse. ONJ can occur as a result of a bone injury like fractures or dislocations. Major dental work is another type of trauma which may also cause ONJ.
