Deciphering Labeled Amounts of Resveratrol

reading-labelsMedia coverage on resveratrol has been popular lately, consequently there are a number of companies promoting their own version of this antioxidant.  One may wonder – what’s the big deal?

Resveratrol, OPC’s and Pycnogenol® are bioflavanoids which are complex organic plant compounds found in various amounts in fruits (and wine), vegetables and certain tree barks.  These bioflavanoids range widely in the amount of active compounds they provide, depending upon how they are processed and delivered (powder, liquid, tablet, etc).  Bioflavanoids counteract oxidative cellular damage and have been shown to reduce  inflammation, suppress free radicals and restore cellular function.  These highly potent antioxidants hold tremendous promise for extending both quantity and quality of life.

Red wine extract, red grape skin extract, grape seed and pulp extract, many dark berry extracts, peanuts and Japanese knotweed contain varying amounts of Resveratrol along with other plant chemicals.

In December 2007 ConsumerLabs.com published their findings on several resveratrol products found in health stores.   Many of these products did not have the amount of ingredient indicated on the label and, in some cases, not all of the listed ingredients.  Some companies advertise having “resveratrol complexes” or “resveratrol formulas” but never indicate the actual amount of resveratrol.

For example, a bottle of red wine contains approximately 1 milligram of resveratrol.  Some resveratrol supplements range wildly from a few micrograms (one thousandth of one gram) to supposedly hundreds of milligrams per dose.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to know if the resveratrol supplement you are considering has more than trace amounts unless the manufacturer uses standardized and uniform manufacturing processes which guarantee every batch has the same measurable amounts of ingredients.

The Isotonix company abides by the following manufacturing practices:

  • Raw materials are sourced with Certificates of Analysis.
  • Products are manufactured using Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Inspected for damage, label accuracy, taste and odor prior to release.
  • Product is quarantined if failing to pass inspection.
  • Independent labs test for isotonic capability, micro contamination and potency.
  • Manufacturing facilities are audited on a regular basis for GMP compliance.
  • All ingredients extracted from natural sources (such as pine bark, citrus, bilberry and grape seed) are tested for pesticide residue using gas chromatography.

Of course no nutrient is of benefit if it’s not absorbed.  When mixed with the prescribed amount of water, Isotonix products are rendered into an isotonic solution which has a similar fluid pressure to other bodily fluids (like tears, blood plasma, etc).  This  enables absorption to start in just minutes.  When taken on an empty stomach, Isotonix nutrients average 95% absorption in only 5 minutes per dose.

Using Isotonix® Resveratrol assures quality manufacturing, accurate standardized labeling, and patented isotonicity which greatly increases the bio-availability of the product.
